Banja Luka: International day in support of victims of torture

Agency for Cooperation and Development Education and Foundation ,, Udružene žene “, supported by the European Union, the second consecutive year marked the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

This year’s campaign was held on 25 June at the Krajina Square in Banja Luka under the motto ,, For a world without torture. ” Activities marking are organized within the project ,, Ensuring access to justice for witnesses / victims by strengthening the existing and establishing new networks of support to witnesses in Bosnia and Herzegovina “, with financial support from the European Union and implemented by the Agency for Cooperation, Education and Development ACED – Banja Luka, UG ,, Vive žene”- Tuzla, UG ,, Medica” – Zenica and Foundation ,, Udružene žene “.

Great importance to support torture victims and witnesses / victims have a multidisciplinary support networks that are already established and which will be developed through this project. These networks comprised of professionals from institutions (prosecution, courts, mental health centers, social work centers …) and non-governmental organizations.

In addition to the Banja Luka Krajina Square, marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the project partners have organized in several cities around the RS and FBiH: Zenica, Tuzla, Sarajevo, Brcko , Modrica, Visegrad, Mostar, Novi Travnik, Kljuc, Gorazde, the Bosnian Grahovo, Bihac, Bijeljina and Trebinje.

The UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is an international legally binding instrument on Human Rights, which entered into force on 26 June 1987. In honor of the Convention and the Charter of the United Nations, June 26 has been designated as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The Convention aims to prevent torture around the world and it regulates the individual and collective rights of victims of torture, monitoring compliance measures, Convention and establishes the UN Committee against Torture. Bosnia and Herzegovina has incorporated the Convention into the Constitution (Annex I), the list of human rights treaties that are to be implemented in BiH, and the Constitution recognizes and protects the right not to be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment
